Work

As a quick learner, I love developing my skills in a wide area of technology and tools and using this knowledge to help companies improve their performance and better manage their business. With my scientific background I value fact-based decisions. Using technology as a tool, instead of as a goal. Searching for the "question behind the question": finding what customers need rather than what they want.

As a voracious reader, the books deserve a seperate section

Pets

Maybe not your everyday pets (at least not in the city), our micro-pigs are a super fun addition to our little family

Domotica

Having a smart home can be quite convenient (and a lot of fun to build, if you like that kind of thing). It can also be quite expensive and, depending on the equipment, hard to integrate all the different systems. This is why I've chosen to automate my home using "Home Assistant" in combination with the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi is the cheap single board computer which can be used for unlimited different tinker-projects. Home Assistant is an open source, lightweight domotica software, supported by a worldwide community. The ammount of systems that are integrated into Home Assistant is huge and ever growing. This means I can add hardware step by step (e.g. lights, airconditining, speakers, pet feeders, window-covers, camera's, etc. etc.) Controlling all the different devices is great, but it's the automations that really make the system smart. Examples of automations:
  • Lights on when I come home at night
  • Dimming the lights when the media plays
  • getting a phone message with a picture of the person ringing the doorbell
  • Different home modes (home, to bed, away)
  • Feeding the pigs when we're not home

Work-Related [Books]

The Phoenix Project

DevOps is no longer a new concept, however a suprising low number of existing companies have mastered its techniques. This is the story of a company learning and implementing the ways of DevOps. This book teaches you the basics of DevOps and its advantages and all of it is packaged in a great read. An entertaining but eye opening story. in which you might recognize yourself in one or more characters (which can be quite confronting at times..)

Factfulness

It is my job to help companies base their decisions on data/information instead of gut feeling. That's why it was doubly confronting to realize how skewed my perception of todays world really is. And I am not alone in this, we all see the world through evolutionary instincts that were imperative to our survival a few thousand years ago, but are causing us harm today! Therefore this book is a must read for everyone. Get ready to have your world-view challenged, but take comfort in the realization that the world is not as bad as you think it is!

Brief Answers to the big questions

Brief answers to the big questions

A glimpse into the mind of one of the greatest minds of our time. Hawking's ability bring very complex matter across in a very understandable and passionate way has always made me a fan of his work. In this, unfortunately posthumous, work Hawking shines his light on the big questions everyone ponders (or should ponder).

Fantasy [Books]

Stormlight Archive

My current favorite series. Most, if not all, of Brandon Sanderson's books are incredible in their detailed and original world-building. All of his worlds have unique and intricate magic-systems, while most of his series are part of his larger "cosmere". But this is the most elaborate and beautiful of all. The series currently consists of three books, but is planned to contain 10 volumes!
An absolute must-read for fans of the genre.

Kingkiller Chronicles

There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon and the anger of a gentle man.
There is a magic to the way Patrick Rothfuss weaves his words and it grips you from page one.
My only wish is that his new books would release sooner.
But then, his perfection in story telling is well worth the wait.

Licanius Trilogy

In this trilogy (of which I am anxiously awaiting the final book at the moment of writing this), nothing is as it seems. As in most series a group of inexperienced people are to save the world, but from who? Who are the hero's, who are the bad guys? Can you be both? A complex but compelling story.

Riftwar Saga

My very first fantasy series (well, apart from Harry Potter that is) and also the very reason I fell in love with the genre. Feist's "Magician" will leave you wanting more. (Luckily: there is more. ) Although, to be brutaly honest, Feist has milked this series a bit to much and the stories wear painfully thin after the Darkwar Saga in my opinion. Nevertheless, the first parts in the series are genuine master-pieces.
